Vehicle mount questions

Quick answers before you order. Still not sure? Request a quote and we'll confirm the fit.

What do I need to mount a rugged laptop in my vehicle?

A vehicle-specific mount kit that bolts to your vehicle, plus something to hold the computer. Havis sells a pedestal package for the vehicle and a separate dock or cradle for the computer. RAM Mounts sells a complete No-Drill kit with its own laptop tray.

Should I choose Havis or RAM Mounts?

Havis suits computers that need to charge and connect while mounted: the dock powers the computer and adds ports and antenna connections. RAM Mounts No-Drill kits are a simpler, lower-cost way to hold a laptop in its spring-loaded tray, with no charging.

What is the difference between a dock and a cradle?

A dock holds and charges the computer and adds ports (USB, Ethernet, video), with optional antenna pass-through. A cradle only holds the computer: it does not charge it.

Do I need to drill into my vehicle?

Usually not. Most of these kits bolt to the factory seat bolts or existing mounting points. The kit notes show anything specific to your vehicle, such as seat type or maximum mounting height.

How do I know which configuration my vehicle has?

Configurations follow the mount makers' fitment charts: seat type, console or column shifter, police package and factory option codes. Check the window sticker or build sheet, or request a quote and we'll confirm it with you.

What is antenna pass-through?

Docks with dual, triple or quad pass-through connect the computer's built-in antennas (LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi) to external roof antennas for a stronger signal in the vehicle. Choose a dock without pass-through if you don't use roof antennas.

Do Havis docks need a power supply?

Most Havis docks need a vehicle power supply, sold separately; a few come with one built in. Each dock is labeled so you can see which.

Do Havis docks fit RAM Mounts?

No. Havis docks and cradles bolt to the tilt/swivel top of a Havis pedestal package. RAM Mounts kits hold the laptop in their own tray.

Can I buy the mount without a dock, or a dock without a mount?

Yes. The vehicle mount and the dock or cradle can be bought on their own or together.

Which computers and vehicles does the finder cover?

Rugged laptops and tablets such as the Panasonic Toughbook, Getac and Dell Rugged, in police, fleet and work vehicles from 2015 on. The lists below show what is covered today, and we are adding more. If yours isn't listed, request a quote for a universal kit and we'll put one together.

When will my mount ship?

In-stock items ship as soon as your order is processed. Items that aren't in stock usually take 2 to 4 weeks to arrive from Havis or RAM Mounts before we can ship them. Need it by a certain date? Request a quote and we'll confirm the exact ship date before you order.

Can you quote a whole fleet?

Yes. Request a quote with your vehicles, computers and quantities and we'll put together the mounts and docks for the whole fleet.
